Examining Velázquez: A Painting Expedition – Evening Group

Evening Group – Overview

Hi! I am Timothy Joseph Allen, an American professional painter living in Rome, Italy, who has been studying Baroque and Renaissance paintings for the past twenty years.

Join me for a three-month investigation into the technique and style of Velázquez.

By the end of this Expedition we will have:

Examined Velázquez’s grounds, pigments, compositional decisions and process
Made two copies of details from two different paintings from two different times in his career
Made an original work––either a still-life or a portrait––that implements the lessons learned making the copies

Total Cost & Payment Schedule

The total cost of the course is €400 + Iva (€488).

A Deposit of €50 + Iva (€61) is due at the time of registration.

The remaining €350 is divided into two payments of €175, due on the following dates:

October 4th, 2021 – €175 + Iva (€213.50)
November 1st, 2021 – €175 + Iva (€213.50)

Payment requests will be sent from and managed by the payment gateway Stripe.

Language

The course is run in English and Italian.

Level

All levels welcome, beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Materials and Preparation

Three canvases will be needed for the course:

Two canvases, 40 x 30 cm, linen
One canvas, 50 x 70 cm, linen OR 40 x 60 cm, linen

Note: you will need to register for a free PADASOR account if you do not already have one in order to access the Forum.

I will provide you with the high resolution images you will need to make your copies.

You will need to organize the set-up or model for either your original still-life or portrait.

Total Learning Hours, Schedule & Time Zone

The total number of Lessons is 12
The total number of Critiques is 11
Each Lesson and Critique is one hour and thirty minutes
The total number of live learning hours on Zoom is 34.5 hours

The weekly schedule is a Lesson and then a Critique, all live on Zoom.

Each Lesson will take place every Monday evening from 18:00 to 19:30 GMT+1 from Sept. 20th to Dec. 13th, with the exception of Nov. 22nd.

Each Critique will take place every Friday evening from 18:00 to 19:30 GMT+1 from Oct. 1st to Dec. 17th, with the exception of Nov. 26th.

This schedule is designed to accommodate evening participants in Europe and morning participants in North America.

Possible Connection with the Morning Group

A Morning Group of this course will be offered on Thursdays.  If the Morning Group reaches the minimum number of participants, then participants in the Evening Group will also have access to those Lessons and Critiques and the overall schedule and program of the course will build sequentially:

Evening Lesson on Mondays – Live on Zoom
Morning Lesson on Thursdays – Evening Group can view the Recorded Lesson
Morning Critique on Friday – Evening Group can view the Recorded Critique
Evening Critique on Friday – Live on Zoom

However, in the event the Morning Group does not reach the minimum number of participants, then those Lessons and Critiques will be excluded.  The addition or exclusion of the Morning group does not impact the total cost of the course.

Maximum Number of Participants, Minimum Number & Refunds

The maximum number of participants in each group is 10.
The minimum number of participants is each group is 5.
If only 4 or less sign up for the course in a group, then a refund will be provided to each of the 4.

Refunds: the amount refunded is the Deposit minus the processing fee of the payment gateway.  Depending on where you are geographically located when you pay and what kind of credit card you use, this is usually between 1 and 2 euros.

Your Instructor

Timothy Joseph Allen is an American figurative painter who has been living and working in Rome, Italy for over twenty years.  He began his career in 1992, earning a BA in Studio Art at DePauw University and an MFA in Painting at Indiana University, Bloomington in 1998.  He has been teaching at The American University of Rome since 2006 and has managed his own painting school, the Painting and Drawing Art Studio of Rome, since 2010.

Allen’s medium is oil on canvas and his style and subject matter are predominantly inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque.

Realizzato due copie di dettagli da due differenti quadri riferiti a due momenti diversi della sua carriera
Realizzato un quadro originale–una natura morta o un ritratto–che incorpori quanto imparato nel produrre le copie

Costo Totale e Piano Pagamenti

Il costo totale del corso è di €400 + Iva (€488).

È richiesto un acconto di €50+Iva (€61) al momento della registrazione.

Fornirò a tutti i partecipanti le immagini ad altra risoluzione necessarie per realizzare le copie.

Per il quadro originale, invece, ogni partecipante dovrà preparare la propria composizione per la natura morta o organizzarsi con una modella per il ritratto.

Il programma settimanale comprende sia una lezione che una critique, entrambe live su Zoom.

Le lezioni si terranno ogni lunedì sera dalle 18:00 alle 19:30 GMT+1 dal 20 settembre al 13 dicembre, con l’esclusione del 22 novembre.

Le critique si terranno ogni venerdì sera dalle 18:00 alle 19:30 GMT+1 dal 1 ottobre al 17 dicembre, con l’esclusione del 26 novembre.

Questo orario è stato concepito per adattarsi alle esigenze dei partecipanti in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

Possibili Connessioni con il Gruppo di Mattina

Un corso di mattina è offerto il giovedì per accomodare le esigenze dei partecipanti nel Medio ed Estremo Oriente e in Australia. Se il corso del giovedì mattina dovesse raggiungere il numero minimo di partecipanti e, quindi, attivarsi, i partecipanti al corso serale avranno accesso anche alle registrazioni di quelle lezioni e il programma complessivo si costruirà in successione:

Lezione serale il lunedì – Live su Zoom
Lezione di mattina il giovedì – Il gruppo della sera accederà alla lezione registrata
Critique di mattina il venerdì – Il gruppo della sera accederà alla critique registrata
Critique serale il venerdì – Live su Zoom

Nel caso in cui, invece, il corso di mattina non dovesse attivarsi, le lezioni e le critique registrate saranno ovviamente escluse. L’aggiunta o l’esclusione del gruppo di mattina non incide sul costo totale del corso.

Numero massimo di partecipanti al corso serale: 10
Numero minimo di partecipanti al corso serale: 5.
Eventuali rimborsi: Se non dovesse raggiungersi il numero minimo di partecipanti per far partire il corso, verrà rimborsato l’acconto versato da coloro che hanno già completato l’iscrizione.

NB: In caso di rimborso dell’acconto versato, la somma rimborsata sarà pari all’acconto dedotto delle commissioni del portale di pagamento. Le commissioni variano tra 1 e 2 euro in relazione alla carta di credito utilizzata e al Paese da cui proviene il pagamento.

Il Docente

Timothy Joseph Allen è un pittore figurativo americano che vive e lavora a Roma da più di 20 anni. Ha iniziato la sua carriera nel 1992 laureandosi in Studio Art presso la DePauw University e conseguendo un Master MFA in Pittura nel 1998 presso la prestigiosa Indiana University, Bloomington. È docente presso The American University of Rome dal 2006 e gestisce una sua scuola di pittura e disegno, the Painting and Drawing Art Studio of Rome, dal 2010.

La sua tecnica è olio su tela. Il suo stile e i suoi soggetti sono prevalentemente ispirati al Rinascimento e al Barocco.
