The Portrait in a Landscape: Examining Antonello da Messina

Painting in Oil on Canvas on Wood Panel

Introduction:

In this course we will work from a live model and execute a portrait in an invented landscape on canvas that has been glued to a wood panel.  As a guide to our technique, we will examine the paintings of Antonello da Messina, in particular, an unfinished work found in the Museo Correr in Venice.  (We won’t go to Venice, but I have plenty of high resolution pictures.)

The goal is threefold:

  1. Learn how to glue a canvas to a wood panel, how to prime the canvas, and experience how this surface differs from a regular stretched canvas.
  2. Examine the unfinished painting by Antonello da Messina to gain insight into his technique and materials and the order in which he executed a painting.
  3. Combine the experience of working from life in the creation of a portrait with the use of memory and imagination to invent a surrounding landscape in the service of completing a harmonious, unified picture.

Sabato pomeriggio

Il Ritratto nel Paesaggio: Alla scoperta di Antonello da Messina

Pittura a olio su tela applicata a tavola

Introduzione
